About the exhibition
Serene and Bobby have both travelled to North Iceland last summer to participate in an artist-in-residence programme. Surrounded everyday by boundless landscapes and contradistinctive culture to that of their hometown, they are much impressed and inspired. The Icelandic experience has transformed their perception – as a dimension convertor – to establish a new comprehension of different aspects in life. In half a year’s time, they put together ineradicable memories from the journey in this exhibition, where their inspiration and sentiment are meant to be revealed.
Serene Hui’s works revolve around the abstract perception of time and its implication. In summer months, white nights occur in places situated in the Arctic Circle. The concept of time vanished when the sun remains visible for the full 24 hours. Having been resided in such atmosphere, her perception has become as delicate as it can be, especially to personal ideologies and the pace of passing time. Exclusive features in Iceland such as the black sand and the mid-night sun are manifested as a portal to visualize the psychological experiences that go beyond the physical. The works as well address a possibility of latent escapism afforded by altered perception.
Yu Shuk Pui Bobby has played with the waterfall in Olafsfjordur of North Iceland. Her body assimilated into the Icelandic landscape, through the GIF of the loop function, resulting in admirable imagination: Breakthrough the boundary of human body, but also return to mother of nature.
